Quinta do Vesuvio 1991

Single Quinta Vintage Port

All the hallmarks of a classic Vintage with intense colour and rich and very concentrated flavours.

Description

A wetter than average winter followed by a very hot summer lowered the yields in the vineyards. Consequently only 31 pipes (just under 1900 cases) were bottled from a total production of 223 pipes. Picking at Vesúvio began on the 9th Sept and was done by hand in the traditional manner. In the ancient granite lagares the grapes were trodden by foot.

A new system of cooling the must was introduced for the first time. A device is submerged into the must and through which temperature-controlled water is circulated. This has proved to be very successful and gave excellent control of the fermentation temperatures.

Our Expert's Recommendation

"This Vintage is beginning to show some of the wonderful characteristics of bottle matured wine. It can be drunk now but will repay a few more years in your cellar. Lots of power and length - an excellent wine now but will improve."

Press Comments

"Heady and, funnily enough – porty(!) with great acidity and finesse. One of those claret-like vintages! Lovely!"
Jancis Robinson , Jancisrobinson.com

“Still quite closed on the nose but showing some underlying intensity. Lovely sweet, spicy berry fruit with spicy, peppery tannins and a well-balanced palate”.
Richard Mayson , Wine International

"Quite outstanding concentration in 1991 & 1992: One of the best wines of each Vintage."
Richard Mayson , Decanter Magazine

"Immediate juicy lift of berry fruits on the nose, quite sweet and a little jammy on the palate, with marked tannins, a good warm structure, and a nice long finish".
Decanter Magazine

"Loads of character in this one. You can almost smell the soil. Very powerful and impressive, with masses of tannins and medium sweetness. It shows opulent aromas and flavours of wet earth, green tea and berry. A tough young wine that needs to age".
James Suckling , Wine Spectator
31/07/1994

"Likely to be the best of the '91's. Here the structure is used to full advantage: layers of complex fruit flavours crowd the palate, the finish is long and tight: this is wine of grace and power."
Mark Golodetz , Wine Enthusiast
01/02/1994

"The 1991 appears to be one of the stellar Ports of the vintage".
The Underground Wine Journal, Volume XV, 1994
01/01/1994

"Very good colour. Lovely blackcurrant fruit on the nose. Real flair here. Medium full body. Great intensity of flavour. Creamy rich. Old viney. Excellent. Really lovely long multi-dimensional finish."
Clive Coates , The Vine
01/11/1993

"This wine really kicks in on the finish. Best Vesuvio ever. A young Port with a long life ahead of it. Compact with tight and well-integrated tannins, full fruit, medium sweetness and a long, rich finish. Super wine. From the Symingtons".
James Suckling , Wine Spectator
30/09/1993
