Smith Woodhouse 1997

Vintage Port

An outstanding wine, with a deep opaque purple colour.

Description

The fact that the grape skins had softened, together with the low yields from the 15 year old vines which comprise the majority of the Quinta da Madalena, gave even more intense concentration and deep purple colour to the musts.

Our Expert's Recommendation

"This Vintage is beginning to show some of the wonderful characteristics of bottle matured wine. It can be drunk now but will repay a few more years in your cellar."

Press Comments

"Blackberry, violet and dried flower. Light coffee. Full-bodied, rich, yet seamless and balanced. Medium-sweet, with a long, long finish. Very beautiful. Even better than I remember. Will improve for decades, but ready now."
James Suckling , Wine Spectator

"Top-class… Interesting nose, touch of tar and liquorice, whiff of honeycomb; lean yet fleshy, very good flavour and finish."
Michael Broadbent , Vintage Wine
01/01/2002

"Good, dark color, with raisin, grape and dried cherry aromas. Big and chewy, with lots of fruit and full tannins. Long finish. Smith is the stuff."
James Suckling , Wine Spectator

"This young Port has plenty of berry, floral and bark aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, lightly sweet and very tannic, with an outstanding finish. This has grip."
James Suckling , Wine Spectator
