Smith Woodhouse 1983

Vintage Port

A thrilling classic wine.

Description

The brute strength of this Vintage is impressive, deep and dark with lovely concentration of berry fruit. One of the best 1983s around.

Our Expert's Recommendation

" This wine is now beginning to reach its full maturity and is likely to be ready for drinking. As it ages further, it will begin to develop gently into a more tawny style wine. Delightfully compact."

Press Comments

“Excellent, deep colour, rich, powerful and aromatic. Big, sweet, superb balance, length and grip. Up to 20 years”.
Tim Stanley-Clarke , Decanter Magazine

“Extremely dark crimson with some development…assertive nose with some green hints. Very sweet and dense…Lots of structure…”.

“Richly sumptuous colour. The nose still sings primary fruit, yet with hints of development that are entirely harmonious. The palate is rich, ripe, unashamedly hedonistic and very agreeable to drink now. I think it will, in fact, evolve quite effortlessly; a class act, especially within its vintage”.
Simon Field , The World of Fine Wine

"…very fruity on the nose; sweet, rich, lovely flavour."
Michael Broadbent , Vintage Wine

"Rich, meaty scent, with black plum fruit undertones. Mouth filling and complex, with fresh blackcurrant sweetness and a lush, tarry meaty core. Intense, purposeful and impressive."
Andrew Jefford , Decanter Magazine

"…dark to inky ruby, has an intense cherry, currant, chocolate and fennel nose. The flavors are typical Smith Woodhouse - bold, forward fruits that echo the aromas, with great structure and style. The tannins are a bit aggressive now but this is a stylistic, 1983 - highly recommended."
The Underground Wine Journal

"Fullish colour. Good nose. A little dense still, but good fruit and concentration here. This is very good. Full, tannic but classically constructed. Real depth and dimension. Lovely long subtle fruit. Very harmonious. Very long. Backward. For the long term. Very good indeed."
Clive Coates , The Vine

"Fine classic seamless wine."
Andrew Jefford , Decanter Magazine

"Deep black, concentrated rich cassis and plain chocolate aroma, ripe blackcurrent taste with a warm gripping finish. A classic that will keep. Start to drink early next century."
Robert Parker , Decanter Magazine

"Very impressive for its brute strength. Very deep, dark ruby, with a concentrated cassis nose, full-bodied, rich, powerful and overflowing with fruit flavors and hard tannins."
James Suckling , Vintage Port
