Dow's 1977

Vintage Port

An outstanding and powerful wine.

Description

This wine displays its well-know 'iron girder' character.

Our Expert's Recommendation

"This wine is now beginning to reach its full maturity and is likely to be ready for drinking. As it ages further, it will begin to develop gently into a more tawny style wine. Still quite youthful and will repay from further ageing."

Press Comments

Medium brick-red. Aromas of coffee, prune and milk chocolate. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with a licorice, berry, custard and cream character. Firm and racy. Long and delicious. Beautiful. Just ready now; best from 2008 through 2016. —J.S.

This is an extraordinary house that seems to have been particularly successful with its vintage port since 1977.The 1977, still a baby, is fabulously scented, very rich and concentrated, and has a potential longevity of at least another 30-50 years.

“One of the glories of the vintage. Impeccably Dow in its power and tight kernel of flavor. It tastes of schist and black cherries in profound concentration. The lasting taste glows with floral complexities, the scent of esteva rising out of the black fruit. The color is still dense and dark. This may reach maturity by forty or fifty, and continue to live long after”.

"Loads of all the appropriate parts…The nose endlessly fascinating with sweet fig-like fruit, a squeeze of tangerine, cognac-like spirit, tight-knit but developing fragrance."

“Big and as hard as nails. Loads of raspberry and fruit aromas, with a green stem edge. Full-bodied and sweet, with an iron back-bone of acidity. Long finish. Still needs time. Best from 2002 through 2012.”
James Suckling , The Wine Spectator

"Impressive hard and powerful but very closed for the moment. It should age for many decades. Dark ruby, with rich raspberry and earth aromas, full-bodied, with an excellent balance of full tannins and generous berry flavors."

"Undoubtedly as great as its reputation".
