Dow's 1945

Vintage Port

The first Vintage to be produced after World War II.

Description

This is a legendary wine. One of the greatest Ports of the 20th century. It is a wine that helped create the worldwide reputation not only for Dow's but also for Vintage Port itself. It is complex, intense and multi-layered in its flavours. This Vintage Port should be savoured and appreciated for what it is, one of the world’s very greatest wines.

Our Expert's Recommendation

" Only a few bottles of this great wine remain anywhere in the world. Opening and serving such a rare Port is certain to be a memorable occasion. After many decades of gentle ageing in bottle, this Port will be delicate and wonderfully complex. It has the superb concentration of flavours and aromas of one of the greatest Vintage Ports ever made. This wine should be decanted carefully at least 4 hours before serving to allow the incredible aromas to emerge after so long in bottle. This Vintage Port will continue to improve for many decades to come, but at any stage it will be stupendously good."

Press Comments

We all know that this is a superlative vintage and this was an absolutely flawless bottle, at 63 years old. A huge, brambly Vintage Port, extraordinary in its dimension and impact. Fruit, structure and, still, pure black fruit - perhaps that is its greatest legacy.
Serena Sutcliffe , CUISINE & WINE ASIA 2008 VOLUME 12

“Gorgeous, glorious and rich. Dark ruby in colour, with an amber edge. Full-bodied and wonderfully sweet, with intense aromas of raisin, raspberry and cherry and a long, long finish. Very rich and very fine.”
James Suckling , Wine Spectator
31/12/1999

"The ´45 Dow’s was alive with delicate, ethereal flavors of apples, cinnamon, almonds and oak, all of which lingered with an exceptionally long finish that I can still taste even as I write these words."
Richard Carleton Hacker , The Quarterly Review of Wines
01/03/1999

"Excellent color, displaying a garnet meniscus gradating to a near-black center. Plummy aromas underscored by pronounced scents of maple syrup. Ripe and lush with perfectly meshed acids and tannins, this wonderwork is in remarkable shape, loaded with juicy fruit that refuses to die… was overwhelmed by the purity of the fruit and the staying power."
Tom Smith , The Wine News
01/01/1999

"The peacetime 1945 more than lived up to its mythical status, with its terrific concentration and scents of roses and eucalyptus."
Joanna Simon , Sunday Times Colour Supplement
23/11/1998

"Massive…Deep ruby with a garnet hue, a raisin and licorice nose, full-bodied, with raisin and licorice flavors."
James Suckling , Vintage Port
01/01/1990
