1960 Vintage Port

A very good Vintage that produced elegant and sweet wines. Declared by all the major Port houses.

Drinking Status

Fully mature and ready to drink. Well cellared they will last for decades.

Tasting Notes

The 1960's went through a tough patch in the early 1980's, when they appeared to be a little 'edgy'. Now they have settled into the most glorious old Vintage Ports of the very highest quality. After more than 40 years bottle-ageing, these wines have a superb combination of lovely mature fruit combined with the elegance that only this length of time in bottle can give.

Climatic Conditions

January was dry and cold, followed by continual rain for two months. A perfect April came, but then there was a cool spell with a lot of rain in mid-May. June and July were very hot – creating good prospects. The weather continued to be very fine, with a little rain, in August and September.

Vinification

Harvest started in heatwave conditions, ending with rain.

Winemakers Comments

"The very much wanted rain came at last, with good strong showers off and on from 15th to 17th September. This was of course excellent as it was perfect for the majority of us whose general starting date was 19th, it brought the intense heat to an end and the lagares took more work, which was just what was wanted and it hardly lowered the graduations. The musts generally had very good colour. we are optimistic in thinking that a great propotion of the wines will turn out exceedingly well, as the majority of the musts were very good indeed."
