1920 Vintage Port

This was the first general declaration after the First World War.

Drinking Status

This wine has been fully mature for many years, well cellared, the best wines will last for many more years.

Tasting Notes

Elegant and some well-balanced wines.

Climatic Conditions

The early months were favourable but May was cold and variable. There was intense heat in July and some grapes suffered as a result. August was mainly warm and fine with a little rain. September was decidedly favourable.

Vinification

Harvesting began at the end of September. Quantity was about half the average, with some good wines made.

Winemaker's Comments

"1920 will be very short-possibly only two thirds of last year. The sun has browned a good many grapes but what are left promise well."
19th July 1920
Andrew James Symington

"Vintage began generally on the 27th September. The yield is very small but quality promises well. The mostos (musts) show here and at Zimbro about 15 degrees."
3rd October 1920
Andrew James Symington
