1948 Vintage Port

Question by: Helder, Port Chester, NY, USA

Q:

I have a 1948 oporto wine bottle, the label reads 1948 and is part torn, the seal on top reads J. W. BURMESTER & Co. and has not been touched.  What is it worth and is the wine still good?  I am going to give it to a friend who was born in 1948 and birthday coming up.

A:

Hi Helder, 1948 was a superb Vintage year in the Douro though very few wines were actually shipped, as restrictions continued long after World War II.  If your wine has been well cellared all these years, it could be a real pleasure.

In terms of the value of the bottle, Symington Family Estates are not active in the secondary market for Ports, nor is this one of our brands, so we are not well placed to advise you on the value of your bottle.  Be aware that as a general rule only Vintage Ports from a handful of top producers are sought in the secondary market, and you will have to satisfy any broker or potential buyer that the bottles have been well stored and likely to be in good condition.  To get a valuation, you would be best advised to consult a specialist wine retailer, broker or auctioneer in your area.
