20 Year Old Tawny Port

Question by: Andrew, Toronto, Canada

Q:

I have a bottle of Taylor's 20 Years Old Tawny Port and it was bottled in 1978. What I am wondering is this still drinkable? Is this valueable? Thanks so much.

A:

Hi Andrew,  20 Year Old Tawny Port is a style of Port which has been blended from several different lots of wines which have been aged in small wooden cask for some years - the average age of the final blend being 20 years or more.  This style of Port is blended, bottled and released ready for enjoyment - it is NOT a wine meant to age in bottle.  For that reason, the wine certainly has no value in the secondary market.  As far as drinking - you can only open it and taste.  If the bottle has been stored in good cellar conditions it may pleasantly surprise you.  To learn more about Tawny and other non - Vintage styles of Port and how to store, serve and enjoy them, you may want to read our Guide to Port Styles.
