Question by: Kevin, Austin, USA

Q:

Need advice on purchasing a Vintage year Port near 2006.  I would like to purchase a vintage port near the year of my son's birth to share with him when he turns 21.  He was born in 2006, and I would like to pick a vintage year close in time to his birth.  Any recommendations?

A:

Hi Kevin, Vintage Port is the ideal gift for a coming of age, as it ages incredibly well.  Whether your son chooses to open a bottle on his 21st, or  save it for another landmark occasion, a bottle of fine Vintage Port will offer pleasure throughout his lifetime.

2006 was not a generally declared year, however some fine Quinta Vintage Ports were made.  Already released to the market are the Dow's Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira 2006, Quinta do Vesuvio 2006 and the Quinta de Roriz 2006 (made by Prats + Symington, our joint venture with Bruno Prats for Douro DOC wines and Vintage Port).  Follow the links to read tasting notes and reviews for each of these wines.

Alternatively, if you wish a Declared Vintage Port from top brands Graham's, Dow's, Warre's or Cockburn's, 2007 was a superb year, and our brands have been rated among the stars of the Vintage, with Dow's 2007 earning 100 points from the Wine Spectator and the Cockburn's 2007 just winning the Vintage Port Trophy and a Gold Medal at the International Wine Challenge earlier this year.

Premium Port Wines is our distributor in the USA and if you consult the Contacts Page of the PPW website, you can find a distributor near you for each of these brands - contact them to find the best retail outlet or on-line source for the wine of your choice.  If you have any trouble, contact PPW's Regional Sales Representative in Texas, John Linklater, whose details are also available on that page.

Finally, and most importantly, be sure to read our advice about how to cellar your Vintage Ports so their quality is preserved throughout your son's life.
