American Fortified Wine

Question by: George, Maine, USA

Q:

I have a bottle of 1976 Vintage Port Christan Brothers.  Should it still be good if stored properly?  And if i were to sell it, how much is it worth?

A:

Hi George, We believe this is a fortified wine made by an American distiller and winery.  Just as sparkling wine made outside of Champagne, France, is not strictly "Champagne" so fortified wines made outside of the Douro region of Portugal are not strictly "Ports."   As makers of true Port here in Portugal, and not active in the secondary market for Port or any other wines, Symington Family Estates are not well placed to help you on this query.  We would suggest you contact a specialist wine merchant or wine auctioneer in your area who could advise you on the secondary market for these wines.  Typically only fine old genuine Vintage Ports from Portugal are sought in the secondary market.

All wine is best kept in proper storage conditions, the priorities being a steady cool temperature and darkness.  Our article on Storing Vintage Port will give you the advice you need, which is applicable to any fine wine.
