Question by: Ben, Somerset, GB

Q:

I have one bottle of 1945 Fonseca port which I wish to sell.  What is its value?

A:

Hi Ben, 1945 was a superb Vintage, often cited as one of the best of the 20th Century.  If your bottle has been well-cellared it could be an extraordinary experience, we hope you would consider enjoying this with friends and family.

Symington Family Estates are not active in the secondary market, so we cannot advise your ourselves on the value of this bottle, nor is this one of our own Port brands.  In the UK we would suggest you contact a specialist retailer such as Berry Brothers & Rudd, who have the BBX on-line wine exchange which may list something similar to give you a starting idea on value.  Alternatively, you may want to contact one of the auction houses that routinely handle vintage wines, such as Bonham's, Christie's or Sotheby's.  Bear in mind, any broker or buyer will want to know more about the provenance of your bottle and need some assurance that the wine has been well-cellared since purchase.  For a buyer's perspective on these matters, take a look at our guide to Purchasing Vintage Port.
