Value of Australian Fortified Wines

July 9, 2012
Question by: Ryan, Burnie, Australia

Q:

My pop has a bottle of port, a collectors edition from the 1983 Americas Cup, the one Australia ii won.  Is this worth anything or do you need more info? cheers

A:

Hi Ryan, Just as sparkling wine made outside of Champagne, France, is not strictly "Champagne" so fortified wines made outside of the Douro region of Portugal are not strictly "Ports."   As makers of true Port here in Portugal, and not active in the secondary market for Port or any other wines, Symington Family Estates are not well placed to help you on this query.  We would suggest you contact a specialist wine merchant in your area who could advise you on the secondary market for these wines, or one of the auction houses which routinely handle wine, such as Bonham's, Christie's or Sotheby's, all of which have contacts in Australia.

Another possibility would be to search the Port discussion forums, For The Love of Port (USA based)  and The Port Forum (UK based).  Both sites have a global audience and discuss fortified wines generally, not just Port.  You may find tasting notes in their databases of member notes, or other discussion of these wines on their discussion boards, and if not, you can register for free and post your question there to see if any members are familiar with these wines.  Both forums are very friendly and helpful.

Be aware anyone looking to buy or re-sell your wines on your behalf will need to know the wine has been well-cellared. For more information about buying wines in the secondary market (which will help understand the sell side too) look at our article about Purchasing Vintage Port.
