Port as a Christening Present

June 22, 2012
Question by: Chrissie, London, UK

Q:

It's my nephew's Christening on 24th June, and I was keen to get a bottle of port from the year he was born - 2011.  Is it possible to pre-order a 2011 bottle?, if so, could you advise of likely prices & how i could go about this.

A:

Hi Chrissie, Vintages are only declared, at the earliest, about 18 months after harvest - so in the case of 2011, we won't know what Ports are being declared or bottled until April or May of 2013.  At that time, if we declare Vintage Ports for any of our brands, or decide to bottle Quinta Vintage Ports, you will be able to place your order with your local wine merchant and the bottles would be delivered later in the summer or autumn, depending on your merchant's own arrangements.  As far as pricing, that is heavily dependent on local duties and taxes; the best way to get a sense of pricing would be to consult a local wine merchant.  In the UK, a good reference is the website for Berry Brothers & Rudd, and search for Vintage Port.  The most recent declarations are 2007 when all our brands declared, or the 2009 Warre's.
