2012 Port

My business partner has just had a baby and I wanted to get a bottle of port bottled this year. How do I do that?

Hi Steve, It is traditional to make a christening present of a case for Port for a new born child, usually a Vintage Port from the year of birth.  The trouble in this instance is... we haven't even had a harvest yet this year!  The wines will be made this autumn, and whether we declare a Vintage Port or instead choose to bottle Quinta Vintage Ports will not be announced until May of 2014.

If you prefer to make such a gift now, some recent Vintage Ports you might try to locate include the Warre's 2009, which was a special declaration to commemorate the freedom of Porto from French occupation during the Peninsular War, as Captain William Warre of the port-making family was instrumental in the final battle; read more about this wine in our news article about the release of Warre's 2009.  Alternatively, Quinta do Vesuvio 2009, which recently received 98 points from Kim Marcus of the Wine Spectator, and Dow's Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira 2009 were released en primeur last year and should still be available, or the Vesuvio 2010 and Senhora da Ribeira 2010 are being bottled and shipped now, and should be available in the next few months.

Perhaps the gift of a currently available bottle for the parents now to celebrate, and the promise of a birth-year Port for the child to be delivered in 2014 would solve the dilemma?

In the UK you will be able to source these wines from Vintage Marque, an on-line retailer affiliated with our distributor.  If you do not see the Port you want listed on their site, contact them directly and they can help you with a special order, or to find a retailer near you.  Another top on-line UK merchant is Berry Brothers & Rudd, or if you are in London or Basingstoke stop by their shops for help.
