Value of a Tawny Port

April 13, 2012
Question by: John, Charlotte, NC, USA

Q:

I have a bottle with case of Ferreira Old Tawny Porto 20 year NV Duque de Braganca purchased in 2001.  How much is it worth?

A:

Hi John, Indication of age Tawny ports, such as your 20 Year Old, are blended from cask aged wines and bottled ready for drinking.  Tawny is a Port style which is not intended for, and does not benefit from bottle ageing the way a Vintage port does.  For this reason, unless the bottle has some unique historical value, it is not likely to be sought in the secondary market.  If it has been well stored, in a cool dark place, it should still be enjoyable - we recommend you chill your Tawny ports and serve around 15 to 17º C.
