Value of a 1977 Vintage Port

April 13, 2012
Question by: Kim, Chesham, UK

I have a bottle of Delaforce 1977 Vintage Port stamped DE 526920, can you please advise me on how it should be stored and what you think the current value might be?

Hi Kim, 1977 was an excellent year, generally producing concentrated, long-lasting and complex wines.  Vintage Port, like all fine wines, should be stored on its side, in a cool dark place, where it will not be subjected to sharp changes in temperature.  Under the Enjoying Port menu tab above, we have a series of articles about purchasing, storing and serving port - our article on Storing Your Port will give you more details about proper storage.

As far as selling your bottle, Symington Family Estates are not active in the secondary market for Port, so we cannot advise you.  We would suggest you consult a wine merchant that is active in the secondary market, such as Berry Bros & Rudd in the UK, whose BBX on line market may be of interest to you, and give you some indications of value for Ports of this age or from this producer.  Alternatively, consult any of the auction houses that regularly handle premium wines, such as Bonham's, Christie's or Sotheby's.  Be aware that any potential broker or buyer will want information about the provenance of the wine, and evidence that it has been stored carefully and is therefore still likely to be enjoyable.  You might look at our article about Purchasing Vintage Port to understand the buyer's perspective on this.
