Port to Take Home to Sweden

March 28, 2012
Question by: Birgitta, Kalmar, Sweden

Q:

Please name a good Port to bring back from Portugal to Sweden.

A:

Hi Birgitta, A quick check on the Swedish alcohol monopoly's website shows they have a good range of Graham's Ports available as well as a selection of ports from Dow's and Smith Woodhouse.  So you should focus on bringing back some Ports you could only purchase here in Portugal.  Our recommendations would be:

  • Warre's is unavailable in Sweden, and has a very elegant flavour profile as compared with the sweet richness of Graham's or the drier more austere Dow's.  The 2009 Vintage was a special limited edition commemorative Port only available in Portugal and the UK and would be very special indeed.
  • Any of our Quinta Vintage Ports would also be unique - the Monopoly has Graham's Quinta dos Malvedos 1999, so here in Portugal look for Dow's Quinta do Bomfim 1999 or any vintage of Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira which is released en primeur the latest being 2009, or Warre's Quinta da Cavadinha 1996.
  • Finally, any of the more recent vintages of Quinta do Vesuvio - the Monopoly has 1994 and 1995, so look for more recent vintage - again, these are released en primeur and the latest is 2009.

We hope your visit to Portugal will include Porto!  Our staff at the Graham's Lodge can further advise you with your selection from any of these brands and advise on shipping wine directly home.
