Question by: Muriel, Glasgow, UK

I recently bought a bottle of Warre's 1975 Vintage Port for my son and was surprised to see that it specified By appointment to the King of Denmark. We have puzzled over this since we thought he died in 1972 and wonder why this does not read "the Queen of Denmark"?

Hi Muriel, Your are correct, King Frederick IX died in 1972.  We have no clear records on this, but believe that there is some period of transition with the re-granting of warrants from one monarch to the next.  Certainly the next declared vintage, 1977, does refer to the Queen of Denmark.
