Dow's Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira 2012

Release Notes

Exceptionally aromatic with aromas of violets, which is typical of Senhora da Ribeira Vintage Ports, coming from the south facing Touriga Franca vineyards, which in 2012 achieved perfect ripeness. There are also hints of blackberry, blackcurrant and black plum on the nose. Notes of Esteva (rock-rose) are also present, the result of the Touriga Nacional, which often expresses these scents. There is some spice from the relatively high proportion of Sousão, which also delivers fresh acidity and minerality. On the palate the hallmark Dow’s drier style shows through in the long finish and ripe but firm tannins.

Component varieties:
Touriga Franca – 45%
Touriga Nacional – 35%
Sousão – 20%.

The 2012 Senhora da Ribeira Vintage was trodden in lagares in the Quinta’s own small, specialist winery and as the musts fermented, their aromatic intensity, deep colour and wonderful freshness were clearly indicative of some very fine wines in the making. Only a tiny fraction of the estate’s production – a mere 450 cases – was bottled, and all of it is offered en primeur.

Tasting Notes

This Port comes from a vineyard across the Douro from Quinta do Vesúvio. It is supremely elegant, with sophisticated black and red fruits that are sustained by a layer of fine, dusty tannins. On the dry side for a Vintage, it has acidity, structure and obviously great potential for aging. Drink from 2025.

Lithe and muscular, with notes of white pepper to the cherry, plum tart and dried raspberry flavors. Fresh and minerally on the refined finish. Drink now through 2024.

Offers focused minerality to the refined red plum and raspberry flavors, accented by a snap of licorice. Lithe, complex and well structured, this delivers plenty of grip for aging. Best from 2020 through 2045.

A vibrant, floral, strawberry-scented Port, this feels cool in its blue fruit purity. Schisty tannins support the ripe fruit without blackening it, the wine ending elegant and refined. A clean, modern style that's drinking well on release, it's suited to age for ten or 15 years.

Score: 92 points
