Warre's 2011

Release Notes

The historic properties of Quinta da Cavadinha and Quinta do Retiro Antigo have been the backbone of Warre’s Vintage Ports for generations. The combination of the cooler climate of the Cavadinha vineyard in the Pinhão Valley and of the old vineyards at Retiro Antigo in the Rio Torto Valley produce exceptionally elegant and aromatic wines, lending them a charming, graceful style, which differentiate them from most other Vintage Ports. This finesse combines with a crisp minerality and definition on the palate, finishing with tremendous persistence.

The Warre’s 2011 Vintage Port also incorporates a small lot from Quinta da Telhada, situated in the heart of the Douro Superior and whose opulent flavours of blackcurrant, aromas of violets, and smooth ripe tannic structure contributed additional texture.  The final blend by Quinta is 53% Cavadinha, 28% Retiro Antigo and 19% Telhada.  In terms of grape varieties, the blend is balanced between 40% very old mixed vines, 37% Touriga Nacional and 23% Touriga Franca.

Warre’s 2011 shows the deep opaque purple colour of youth and is layered with aromas of sweet blackberry fruit and typically perfumed floral hints of rockrose and fresh violets. On the palate the wine has great finesse and balance, with traces of minerality running through the silky tannic backbone, leading to a long velvety finish.

Tasting Notes

An extremely supple, balanced Port with lovely depth of juicy sweet cinnamon-accented black cherry, floral lift and a charge of fine schistous/graphite tannins, which tease out a long, elegant, tapered finish – very clean and precise – seemingly drier than the Graham’s.

Sweet, warm and  mellow, with fresh pure blackberry and black cherry fruit, yet fresh with amazing purity, concentration and depth. Seductive and compelling.

Score: 94–96/100

Closed, dense with plenty of floral fruit underneath; ripe, pure cherry-stone fruit, sweet and gentle, very beautiful at this stage, firm but ripe tannic core extending all the way through to the finish.  Stunningly good.  2030 – 50+

Score: 5 Stars, 19 Points
