Smith Woodhouse 2011

Release Notes

The majority of Smith Woodhouse’s Quinta da Madalena vineyard is composed of Vinha Velha (old mixed vineyards) which therefore have a marked influence on the style of the 2011 Vintage Port; an intensely concentrated and complex wine with layer upon layer of aromas and flavours.  The other principal contribution comes from Madalena’s Touriga Franca, which excelled in the perfect harvest conditions of 2011.  The overall production of the quinta was very low yielding at just an average 700g per vine, which makes it one of the least prolific years in recent memory.

The charming floral aromas of rockrose and violets of the Touriga Franca deliver superb elegance, finesse and harmony to the Smith Woodhouse 2011 Vintage Port. The sizeable contribution from the old mixed vines shows through in the gorgeous layers of liquorice and blackberry fruit. The seamless spicy tannins give grip and authority to this Vintage Port, which has the potential to age for several decades.

Tasting Notes

An elegant, spicy Port with lifted coriander seed and darker gingerbread notes to its ripe, fleshy plum.  Seamless tannins show plenty of sucrosity.  Very well composed.

Supple, sweet and open with lovely bright cherry and blackberry fruit. Nice purity and structure: vivid and intense.

Score: 92–94/100

Quite opulent in style with succulent berry fruit, quite powerful on the finish. Full and flattering. Drink 2025 – 40+

Score: 4 Stars, 17 Points
