Warre's 2009

Release Notes

Lifted floral aromas, very perfumed and fragrant - typical Warre elegance:  roses and violets with an attractive minty/eucalyptus edge.  Mouth-filling, gorgeous blackberry and dark cherry fruit cloaked in dark chocolate and underpinned by spicy, peppery tannins.  Irresistible for drinking young, this Vintage Port is - notwithstanding - cast in a classic mould, with the staying power for very long-term ageing.

There will be only 500 cases (6,000 bottles) of this wine bottled and sold, almost entirely en primeur.

40% Touriga Franca, 32% Vinha Velha (old vines) and 28% Touriga Nacional, all vinified in lagares.  A portion of each of these varieties was sourced from Quinta da Cavadinha, two different lots of Vinha Velha came from Quinta do Retiro, and a portion of the Touriga Franca was sourced from Quinta da Telhada.

Alcohol by volume v/v (20º C): 20%
Total Acidity g/l tartaric acid: 4,80

2011 tasting note year

This Port was a standout in its “blind flight” and unquestionably deserved a full on declaration, regardless of the history behind it. Riveting from the first fresh whiff, with a bouquet of rose petals, lavender and kirsch, accented by an herbal essence and pine. Whoa, this got my attention! The palate is equally compelling: full, concentrated, luxurious and harmonious with gobs of glycerin, yet it remains vinous and fabulously intense. Rich and with a mink-like mouth feel, from the deft balance to the enduring finish, this is class in a glass. ... A charismatic and seriously fine bottle of Vintage Port with upside cellaring potential for a minimum of four decades.

Score: 95/100
