A classical wine in a compact vintage, this presents the schist-driven, spicy tannins of Douro grapes along with their plump, juicy freshness. It's plummy, rich and lasting, ready to drink with an almond tart.

Deep core with bright, ruby edge. Ripe, complex berry fruit nose with mulberries, cherries and violets. All continue into the lively, marvellously rich mouth. Big palate with broad, ripe fruit flavours. Hint of liquorice. Great balance and attractive lift in the tail. Enjoy now or over many years to come.

Rich black fruit, lush middle, nice structure and depth of fruit, firm towards the back but fruit shows through.

A striking deep crimson colour leads the way to a dark sweet cherry nose.  The palate performs the delicate balancing act between sweetness and tannic structure.  Sweet stone fruit flavours give way to mellow fruit in the persistent finish.

There is a beautiful purplish-ruby hue to the youngster.  The aromatics are a bit reticent and dark berry, tar and alcohol are coaxed by vigorous swirling for a few minutes.  A  very approachable young VP, even softer in the mouth than the 1996, with delicious plum and boysenberry that lingers long on the palate.

Score: 91/100
