Ruby red coloured. Intense nose, black ripe fruit. Nutty character. Powerful. Good mouth feel. A splash of blackcurrant on the palate at the end.

A brooding monster yet to be unleashed. Yet it still has a huge appeal of chocolate, pepper and figgy fruit with a velvety, seamless palate.

Dow’s quinta wine has traditionally come from Bomfim, near Pinhao. This is the second release from their Douro Superior quinta across the river from Vesuvio – and it is a Knockout. When first poured, the aroma seems grapey and unformed. But give it plenty of time, perhaps a day in a decanter, for the power and impact of the wine to show. It grows into a gentle giant, with the potency of oregano, as though of esteva on steroids, hard to get all of it into the mouth or the brain at once. The wine is gripping, both voluptuous and tight, tasting like an old field blend of the varied Douro vines, wild as crushed berries and herbs. Cellar it to see what it may become – perhaps the wine of the vintage.

Score: 94/100
