Dow's Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira 1998

Release Notes

The wine will repay the patience of allowing it to mature for 12, 15 or more years in bottle. It will then develop the magic bouquet and flavour unique to Vintage Port. Shows all the hallmarks of a classic Dow Vintage, with an intense deep purple colour and on the nose, opulent floral scents of violets and roses. On the palate very ripe berry fruit flavours, with fabulous balance, and elegant but powerful tannins providing a perfect finish. Only 2500 cases of the very finest wine from Senhora da Ribeira have been selected for the company's Bicentennary year.

Alcohol by volume v/v (20º C): 20%
Total Acidity g/l tartaric acid: 3,80

Bought back by Dow’s in this, the year of its bicentenary: still deep and opaque, dense and tightly knit with typical Dow austerity, dark chocolate concentration and cast-iron tannins; big and solid with a fabulous flourish of a finish.

Score: 18/20

Low yields produced potentially outstanding wines, prospects of a fully declared vintage dashed by rain during harvest; still very deep and youthful, opaque; not very expressive on the nose (just a phase in its evolution, I suspect); fine, dense, and tight knit, with some flesh, yet showing characteristic Dow austerity (2.95º Baumé), a dark-chocolate core (80% cocoa solids), and cast-iron tannins; big and solid with a fabulous, explosive finish.  Top-notch single-estate Port that would benefit from another 5 years in bottle.

Score: 18/20

The real revelation of the lunch was a young vintage port that was so delicious that the company, which included three more Masters of Wine, were positively drooling over it.…Loaded with fresh mulberry fruit, with the frankest, softest, possible appeal, this wine is glorious to drink now and will probably continue to be so for another year or so before it goes into its shell and becomes, eventually, a grown-up vintage port as opposed to ‘sweet red wine’ of the finest sort.

…certainly the most elegant and gently harmonious wine of the vintage.
