Smith Woodhouse Madalena 1995

Release Notes

Smith Woodhouse & Co. has decided for the first time ever to release 'en primeur' a bottling of wine from it's long associated Madalena vineyard in the Rio Torto Valley.  Occasionally in the past small individual bottling have been made in good but not generally declared years (1982 and 1988 being examples), but this is the first time where the directors have felt that the young wine is so exceptional as to merit a release when only two years old.

Peter Symington's tasting notes:  More colour than usual from this vineyard.  Delicate flowery nose with strong Touriga Francesa characteristics.  In the mouth, concentrated and very ripe fruit although with the acidity to ensure a clean finish.  Good balance of fruit and tannin.

Alcohol by volume v/v (20º C): 20%
Total Acidity g/l tartaric acid: 4,88
Baumé: 3.4

Fine ruby red colour.  The Madalena 1995 Vintage is showing classic mint and dark berry fruit aromas.  On the palate, rich, succulent, with excellent super ripe fruit flavours. Mature and full-bodied, with firm tannins and a long and lingering finish.

Balanced, smoothly-textured, sweet and very long. Crushed strawberry flavours melt into firm tannins. Compelling white pepper and tar notes.
