The 1994 Vintage Port is set for re-release. It has about 92 grams per liter of residual sugar. It's a beauty, with all that Dow power and structure that I've loved over the years--even after some hours of decanting. Intensely concentrated in flavor, without being jammy, this lingers on the gripping finish after starting with a touch of mint. Serious and brooding, it is not yet as complex and as developed as it could be--but this is Port and that will come in time. Be patient. In the meanwhile, if you must crack this now, give it a few hours in a decanter, to state the obvious. This is a terrific Dow's VP that is still growing and improving. It is still about its potential in some ways and it may well exceed expectations. It will certainly acquire even more complexity with more cellaring. Personally, I would try to give it at least another decade in the cellar."

Deep, dark and still dumb. This probably needs another five years plus to open up. Opulent on the palate, characteristically sweet and succulent, fine and focused with broad, well-structured tannins on the finish. Will be very impressive to drink from 2016 onwards.

I've had this early and often and have a special fondness for this particular Dow.  It is one of the few Ports I've ever purchased in 375 ml, so I could check on it whilst young and not have to touch my cases of 750s. Dark and brooding scents of cassis, blackberry, fennel and earth.  Reticent at first, I liked it a lot but can only imagine how much better it would have shown with another six hours in the decanter.  Massively fruited with plum flavors and a minty-herbal character which I found exotic and refreshing.  Sheer power structurally with a deep reservoir of acidity and brash, ripe tannins . Concentrated and full-throttle intensity combine to provide a lip smacking big-boned VP with extraordinary aging potential, a crazy long finish. This is a dangerously delicious Dow for the ages.

The good colour extraction experienced during this vintage together with the excellent ripe fruit characteristics ensure that this is one of the finest Vintage Ports produced during the last 20 to 30 years. Deep purple colour. On the nose rich and voluptuous fruit aromas of wild berries, roses and violets. On the palate intense fruit flavours and bitter chocolate, full bodied, with plenty of tannins and an excellent fruity aftertaste.

When very young the most "blue" in colour of the 1994s. Rich plums nose. Wet violets. Incredible, almost essence-like texture. Damsons finish, wonderfully soft tannins. Mostly Quinta do Bomfim.  At this young age, this seems the most luscious of the 1994s it is so sweet, when it is often the "driest."  Another recent bottle also had great colour and now a rose petals nose. Mineral elements too. Glorious impact of plums and prunes and sweetness on the palate. Long, dried fruit taste with apricots kicking in. Liqueur-like at the end.

A blackstrap, powerful Port. Black, with intense aromas of raspberries, raisins, flowers and stems. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with a long, rich finish. Tannins pull at your palate. A wine for the future.

It was certainly impressive, with a sort of waxy fruit, not at all spirity despite its youthfulness [1996].  More recently, still opaque; complete, opulatent, laden with fruit and flesh, very dry finish.  Very good future.

The massive 1994 is unquestionably the finest Dow I have tasted since the 1977.  This opaque purple-colored wine is not as developed or flamboyant as Fonseca, but it is super-concentrated and multi-layered, with huge masses of fruit and some tannin in the finish.  This is a slightly drier style than Fonseca or Graham's, but it appears to be a classic, majestic, enormously constituted 1994 that should age effortlessly for three decades or more. It is one of the stars of the vintage.  Anticipated maturity: 2004-2030.
