A very deep youthful colour for its age. The nose is brimming with perfumed haunting scents of rich black fruits, grapes and violets. On the palate, beautifully balanced, with floral elegance and excellent length on the finish.

I’ll end this list [of the 10 Best Wines Tasted at ProWein 2016] with another Symington port. It’s actually a long-time favourite of mine. I’ve tasted many bottles over the last decade and it has consistently been one of the best buys on the secondary port market: you can snap this up at 60–70€ just because 1980 is not a universally declared vintage port year and only a handful of exciting wines were released (Graham’s is also excellent). On top of it, this 1980 seems to be ageing better than most 1985s, 1983s, and 1977s. In fact it looks and tastes like a much younger wine with a tight cocoa pod and chocolate liqueur core. Pure bliss!

Warre’s 1980 Vintage has a deep and youthful colour for a wine that is now 34 years old. The nose is brimming with perfumed, seductive scents of jammy dark fruits combined with floral hints of violets and rockrose. On the palate beautifully balanced, with a characteristic Warre floral elegance and excellent length and intensity on the finish. Drinking wonderfully now but will continue to age gracefully for many years.

Very good colour, attractive good soft nose, toasty clove-like aroma. Good intensity, warm soft palate, balance finish in a soft way.

A magnificently dark wine, with more saturated depth to it than many 82s and 83s… Sweet, spicy, rich, broad, really decked out with good things. A sense of generous perfumed ripeness that is almost Rhône-like here: fat fruits, bay leaves, Christmas spices… Close texture and dense, good, taut, tight, lots of power still left in reserve, while the flavour spectrum is broadening out from the tight-knit fruits of youth to something much richer and spicier. No hurry to consume this hugely diverting and entertaining wine. The fruit qualities are still very much the fresh plum and damson rather than anything more cooked or caramelly.

"Wet washing" nose. Real liquorice and leather taste.  Quite dry and roasted. Great freshness at the end.

Still very deep. Fragrant. Extraordinarily dense, figgy flavour and impressive, very dry finish.

A solid vintage Port from an unsung vintage.  Medium ruby, with clean perfume and black cherry aromas, full-bodied, with silky, sweet concentrated berry flavours and a medium finish.

Score: 88/100
