Dow's 1980

Release Notes

Despite its 26 years of age, this wine is notable for its deep and rich ruby colour. On the nose, there are complex aromas of red fruit and a touch of pepper and chocolate. Full bodied and still fresh, with good round tannins and the long and slightly dry finish that is characteristic of Dow’s Vintage Port.  (2006, Peter Symington)

Tasting Notes

Serena Sutcliffe MW critic

A Century of Vintage Port (booklet, Sutcliffe, 2002 Sotheby's) source

On one tasting it was rather soft, but another bottle bore out the feeling that the year may be underrated. Intense ink and roses on the nose, with fruit, vanillin and cinnamon. Luscious and perfectly constructed but not yet exciting.

A forgotten wine that has always been outstanding. Firm and tight, with raspberry and all-spice character. Full-bodied and sweet, with a long, long finish.

Score: 91/100

Firm, fragrant, floral, elegant with long dry finish.

A good example of Dow's attractively dry Ports.  Medium to deep ruby, with a nose of tar and fresh grapes, full-bodied, with peppery fruit flavours, medium tannins and a silky fnish.  Will improve with age.

Score: 90/100

Two more years in bottle and developing nicely, softer, revealing more flesh.

After one year year in bottle the definitive '80 was still hard and figgy on the nose, sweet, hot and spirity on the palate.
