Pale transparent ruby. High toned and subtle orange peel and great freshness. Some treacle and beautifully ready. Hint of roses. Spirit but not too much. Great stuff! Drink 2000-2030

Medium cranberry red center and slight bricking on the edge. Intoxicating floral fragrance that filled the room, during its nine hour decant; accented by anise, plum and raspberry notes and a bit of spirit. Fresh, fleshy grape, dark cherry and fig flavors melded with underpinnings of licorice, chocolate and warming spirit. It's developing into a stunning middle-aged Port at 34 years of age, with little signs of nearing peak yet. Rich and multi-faceted, smooth and velvety ... even more so the second day it was opened. The acidity was near perfect and the tannins are tame but omnipresent; while the finish was spicy, warm and extremely long. This was an excellent bottle, similar ones will likely drink near peak in fifteen years or so, although quite nice at the moment.

The ’77 Dow had a huge nose of sweet plum and raspberry with hints of flowers. Ripe and opulent on the palate, it had a touch of caramel, along with licorice and molasses, all tempered by ripe berry fruit. The flavors lingered, leaving a sweet aftertaste.

Medium brick-red. Aromas of coffee, prune and milk chocolate. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with a licorice, berry, custard and cream character. Firm and racy. Long and delicious. Beautiful. Just ready now; best from 2008 through 2016.

Dried fruits and rasins on the nose. Prunes and walnut liqueur on the palate. Intriguing sultanas too. Figginess. Coffee liqueur finish. Good drinking now.

Big and as hard as nails. Loads of raspberry and fruit aromas, with a green stem edge. Full-bodied and sweet, with an iron back-bone of acidity. Long finish. Still needs time. Best from 2002 through 2012.

A decade later [mid 1990s] rich, intense, almost explosively assertive, with the grip of a good vintage and long lean dry finish.  Attractive bottles in the late 1990s and, most recently, a very fragrantly scented magnum almost eau de cologne (we were informed that a very distinctive 'herbal' nose is common to all '77s).  Unusual, high-toned, delicious.  Now-2020.

Impressively hard and powerful, but very closed for the moment [writing in 1990].  It should age for many decades.  Dark ruby, with rich raspberry and earth aromas, full-bodied, with an excellent balance of full tannins and generous berry flavors.

The [Dow's] 1977, still a baby, is fabulously scented, very rich and concentrated, and has a potential longevity of at least another 30-50 years.  Drink: 1989-2039.

Over two dozen well-spaced notes, later illustrating the beginning of colour loss in mid-1980s, though still ruby, intense, translucent.  The nose endlessly fascinating with sweet, fig-like fruit, a squeeze of tangerine, cognac-like spirit, tight-knit but developing fragrance.

In 1979 crisp, ruby purple; spirity, beef-tea nose; sweet, full yet fleshy.  Loads of all the appropriate component parts.
