Tasting Notes

Pale clear colour, some depth, still a little bit of pink rather than leather tone colours.  Ripe floral but a bit subdued.  Soft mellow pepper and spice. Nice depth, lingering and clean finish.

Pale colour.  Slightly varnishy nose.  Palate much better – concentration – maraschino cherry.  A lot  more evolved than the Graham or Dow but still a serious wine.

Mid-brick red to mahogany; fine, tight-knit, sweet cherry fruit with mint and esteva (gum cistus), now slightly lifted; lovely gentle medicinal cherry fruit, quite rich and voluptuous initially with a bitter-sweet tannic core and a long, firm, bitter-sweet finish. Long and linear.

Most recent: sealing-wax and liquorice nose. Sweet but not wholly knit and with a curious methylated-spirity finish.

Score: 3 Stars

James Suckling critic

1989 tasting note year

This is ripe and ready to drink.  It is slightly more forward than many of the 1970s from the other top houses.  Medium ruby-red, with rich aromas of cherry and marzipan, medium-bodied, with ripe cherry flavours, balanced tannins and a solid finsih.

Michael Broadbent MW critic

At ten years of age still fairly deep though maturing. A hard, rather unyielding, cardboardy nose. Medium-sweet, medium full-bodied. Its initial fieriness simmering down, but still hard. A good long lean tannic finish.

Score: 3 Stars
