1969 Vintage

No declarations this year.

Viticultural and Weather Conditions

Wet first half the year led to desavinho (abortion of flowering and fruit set) and mildew, which led to lower than average yields. From early July to early September the weather was hot and dry, but the vines continued to be quite backward, never really making up the lost time.

It rained almost constantly between 11th and 14th September, more than is desirable at that time of year. From the 20th September the weather turned fine and dry; the river quintas began picking on 25th September and the Rio Torto quintas 29th September, with Bom Retiro starting on 2 October. Good weather lasted throughout the harvest with only an occasional shower, and graduations were between 12.5 and 13.5 and yields after all were better than expected, though lower than average.

Winemaker's Overview

The general feeling at the close of this 1969 Vintage is that very much better wines have been produced than was at times thought possible, but 1969 is certainly not going to a particularly outstanding Port Vintage.   But as the previous nine Vintages (since 1959) have all been good to outstanding, including three ‘Declared’ years, 1960, 1963 and 1966, we are in no position to grumble at what looks like being no better than an ‘average’ year!
