Tasting Notes

Peter Cobb – personifies older Cockburn’s style – ripe & rich yet dry.  Floral, very elegant.  Surprisingly sweet and rich in the middle palate.  Ripe black fruit, stewed plums.

Pale colour.  Quite a bit of alcohol on the nose/heat.  Palate extremely good but definitely old, liqueur like, dried fruits, bitter almond finish.

Cockburn’s idiosyncratic approach to vintage declarations meant that they preferred 1967 to 1966:  mid-brick red with an orange glint; gentle tea-leaf aromas, soft fragrant and beautifully melded together; lovely sweet, sinewy, elegant flavours, quite dry in style with a touch of tawny marmalade on the finish.  Not big but beautiful and still holding up very well.

Since 1985 palish and mature-looking. Rather hard, pasty, spirity nose. Drying out, medium weight, lean though some flesh and nice texture. Dry finish, Having said this, better than expected, lightish in weight and style and drinking fairly well. [Last noted 2002]

This was the centre of the debate on whether 1967 or 1966 was the best vintage.  Unfortunately, this wine, although it is very good, is no match for the best 1966s.  Medium ruby with a garnet edge, intense plum and blackberry nose, medium-bodied, with plenty of berry flavours, tightly knit tannins and a medium finish.  It will continue to improve.
