Very light ruby with a light pink-tawny meniscus. Tight initially with minty, cocoa, cedar and strawberry aromas. This exhibited the biggest, richest and roundest palate of Dow's troika of VPs. The tannins are still alive and refined; texturally this is a beauty with sumptuous elegance. Massive, dense, voluptuous and with great purity. One of the best bottles of 1963 Dow I've tasted. Bottles of this quality will provide immense pleasure at 65 years of age if not more. An awesome not-yet-fully-mature VP nearing 50!

Balance and power are important characteristics of the Dow 1963. Impressive garnet/ruby colour, with aromas of blackberries, and hints of honey. On the palate, opulent fruit flavours, complex, plenty of rich tannins and a long finish.

We all agreed, however, that the Dow was perfection. Medium deep, mature rimmed, with a lively, harmonious bouquet and flavour. Not a hair out of place.

Still quite a “blue” colour. Cigars and prunes on the nose. Really rich prune compote on the taste. So luscious. Beautifully “married”. A joy to drink - or to keep further. Two other recent notes emphasise the smoky gummy character and the sweet finish, with none of the spirity elements that sometimes mar a 1963. A highly successful, very consistent wine. Classic.

Tasted from a magnum. This is a wonderfully silky and rich wine. Deep and concentrated raspberry and cherry character, with a hint of spice. Full-bodied and very sweet, with layers of fruit and a long finish.

Fullish colour. No undue age. Full, rich and profound. Fresh and classy and on the dry side. Very fine quality here. Subtle. Multi-dimensional. Bags of life. Very lovely.

There was a particularly fine magnum at the Dow bicentenary tasting: very deep colour, its rim somewhat indistinct, showing neither youth nor age. Classic Spanish root bouquet. Still sweet, rich, with marvellous fruit and flesh.

This is an extraordinary house that seems to have been particularly successful with its vintage port since 1977.  The 1963 is a classic, a monumental, rich, still tannic wine that will last at least another 30 years. Drink: 1989-2019.
