Tasting Notes

Dominic Symington critic

SFE source

Deep structured colour, firm heart.  Smoky ripe, rich floral.  Hint of aniseed, ripe richness with a little smokiness.  Very soft gentle and subtle fruit ... but  long flavour and finish.

Beautiful colour, still pinkish.   Aniseed/liquorice on the nose, Tokay/tealeaf.  Liquorice on palate, pruney, finish of maraschino cherry

Mid-deep in colour, still with a pinkish glint; stunning wine on the nose, open fragrant, floral, and very elegant. Pretty (not a word I like using but it suits this wine); liqueur cherry character, rich and focused, still powerful with ripe tannins showing through, lovely length, combining power and finesse in equal measure.

Score: 4 Stars/5 Stars

Mid-deep garnet, thin browning rim; one stinky bottle but otherwise lovely open, floral aromas, aromatic and fine; well balanced black cherry and bitter choc flavours, quite powerful and well knit but not as opulent or showy as the last time I tasted it (2002). Still a lovely wine.

Score: 17.5/20

Most recently: pallish, luminous. Low-keyed at first but opened up fragrantly. Lean dry finish but overall very appealing. Good length. Showing well.

Robert Parker critic

Wine Advocate (magazine) source
1989 tasting note year

This house tends to produce quite full-bodied, rich, alcoholic, spirited vintage ports that never have a great deal of complexity or finesse but offer meaty, chocolaty, spicy, full-bodied, alcoholic flavors at the expense of elegance. The 1963 is fully mature, spicy, with a chocolatey, meaty texture and somewhat hot, short finish.

Score: 86/100

James Suckling critic

This is a very attractive, mature and subtle wine.  Medium ruby with a garnet edge, leafy vanilla and cherry aromas, medium-bodied, with a very good concentration of clean fruit flavours and a medium finish.  A bit one-dimensional.

In 1985, lively-looking with ruby glow. Interesting bouquet, tea, chocolate, liquorice, citrus. Never very sweet, lean, sinewy.
