1959 Vintage

Not declared, a disappointing year. One of the very few years for which Michael Broadbent has not tasted a single Vintage Port!

Viticultural and Weather Conditions

Severe thunderstorms in July and mildew over the summer reduced yields in some areas. The situation was not helped by bad weather and rain in the last few weeks before harvest, although the weather “behaved itself fairly well” throughout the vintage period.

Picking began 21st September at Zimbro, 23rd at Bomfim and within a few days of that at the other quintas.

Winemaker's Overview

The vintage at Zimbro was the smallest in our memory … produced only about 10 pipes! Senhora da Ribeira was fairly free of podre (rot) but suffered in quantity mainly as a result of the severe thunderstorms on 12th July. The musts at Bomfim and most of the better quintas we made were fair but in no way outstanding and we consider we will be fortunate if even fair wines result. We are certainly pleased that we started on our vintage earlier than we had meant to, as delay would almost certainly have resulted in inferior musts.
