Tasting Notes

Still very deep in colour, only just browning on the rim; extraordinaily fresh, powerful, tight-knit bitter chocolate aromas, minty fruit; very fine and focused, dry in characteristic Dow style, remarkably fresh ripe, minty fruit.  Absolutely delicious.  Just about as good as it gets.

Vibrant garnet colour. On the nose blackberry, plum and chocolate aromas, combined with floral hints such as violets. On the palate excellent length, good acidity supporting the fruit flavours and a persistent finish.

Very young colour for the vintage at this age. Fresh, red fruit nose turning smoky. Classic. Douro roasted nose. Roast damson.Such a nolstagic bouquet. So rich and damson-like. Fascinating raisins. Lovely velvet texture. Redcurrants finish. Tasted three times recently and amazingly consistent. Complete fruit, roses and liquorice. Only a touch less structured than the 1945. But more luscious, berryish and fruity.

Medium-full colour. Ample, plump nose. Fresh. Fruity. Very stylish. Very poised. Medium-full body. Excellent grip. Ripe and succulent. Long and classy. Very complex. Very fine.

I have always loved this wine. Dark ruby in colour, with a brick rim and lovely aromas of cherry, blackberry and flowers. Full-bodied and sweet, with loads of fruit and a long, long finish. Still in a holding pattern.

A superb bottle at the bicentenary tasting, I could not fault it…in top condition… worth seeking.

In June 1994 a couple of bottles at a Dow tasting in Aspen, a lovely London-bottled wine with a silkily tannic texture, the other very fragrant with a more peppery finish. Around this time some other bottles tending to dry out though very flavoury, with a lingering finish. Then vanilla and liquoirice noted an a touch fo acidity creeping up.

Plenty of fruit and a solid backbone. Brilliant ruby-garnet, with a rich tomato and cassis nose, full-bodied, with tons of fruit flavors, medium tannins and a rich finish.

Countless good notes from the mid-60s. Never very deep in colour though firm and flavoury.
