Tasting Notes

Still with a hint of pink in the heart of the wine.  Clear leather tone, limpid.  Lovely smoky tones, tobacco leaf.  Still floral, scented nose, very delicate, not powerful.  Wonderful richness, lingering length.  Surprisingly good!

Pale colour.  Some smoke/tar on the nose.  Caramel and honey.  Concentrated.

Surprisingly good depth of colour: mid-deep centre with a thin browning rim; lovely, pure scented, floral aromas, esteva (gum cistus) still fresh and fragrant; gentle, sweet fruit, still lithe, creamy milk chocolate intensity, long and fine with peppery length.  Lovely balance and one of the best 1950s that I have tasted. Wyndham Fletcher (ex-Cockburn’s) described this as a ‘useful rather than a great year’.

1992 tasting note year

Sixteen notes since 1959 and always found to be lean and spirity.  Pale, fully mature, watery-rimmed, fragrant but reminiscent of an old Sercial madeira. Medium-sweet, flavoury, dry fniish. Last tasted May 1992.

James Suckling critic

Vintage Port (book, Suckling, 1990) source
1989 tasting note year

Like a very good glass of 20-year-old tawny.  Medium garnet, with a light, nutty plum and vanilla nose, light-bodied, with sweet vanilla, nut and fruit flavours and an elegant finish.  Perhaps past its prime.
