Tasting Notes

One of the darkest red colors on the night. Fresh and complex co ee and fruits on the nose, fading residual fruit. A very balanced palate, with a noticeable acidity and a strong aftertaste. Now to 2040.|18

Pale brown colour. A little mute to begin but with coaxing and patience a wonderfully complex bouquet of coffee, figs, mushrooms, damp soil, preserved kumquat and dried cherry / mulberry emerges.  With a high level of enlivening acidity, the incredibly rich palate has layers of spice, coffee and savoury flavours well supported by a medium level of velvety tannins.  Long finish with some lingering notes of creme brulee.  Fully mature but should cellar a further 8-10 years at least.

Score: 97/100

One of the best of the century, rivalling 1912. This wine was mostly bottled in Oporto due to shipping restrictions. Excellent garnet colour with a ruby centre. Great aromatic concentration and complexity, showing plummy aromas, hints of maple syrup, cocoa and spice. On the palate incredible depth and length with ripe fruit flavours and a steely backbone of`tannins.

… seemed indestructable, with extraordinary strength and a real “bite” at the end. The bouquet is pure “wine and roses” – completely classic. Such huge dimension, structure and impact and utterly balanced between damson fruit and power.

1999 tasting note year

Gorgeous, glorious and rich. Dark ruby in colour, with an amber edge. Full-bodied and wonderfully sweet, with intense aromas of raisin, raspberry and cherry and a long, long finish. Very rich and very fine.

Score: 97/100
