Viticultural and Weather Conditions

Despite snow in March, it was an exceptionally dry year and rain was wanted.  A little rain finally fell just before Vintage which started 19th September. The weather throughout was dull with a little insignificant rain.

Winemaker's Overview

Vintage started at the three Quintas on the 19th September, but at most places we started on 26th.  1938 was exceptionally dry there being practically no rain throughout the year, but the grapes were clean and entirely free of any disease.  The much required rain only came a few days before the vintage, but the very little rain that fell during those days did a very great deal of good and the grapes entered the lagares looking very nice indeed. ... We are hopeful that 1938 will turn out well.  Bomfim in spite of a certain amount of queima (sunburn) produced more than we had anticipated: 94 pipes including brandy.
