Tasting Notes

Richard Mayson critic source
2012 tasting note year

Quite pale, tawny centre, thin pale rim; lovely nose, apples with honey and cinnamon (apple pie), just a touch of spirit showing through; fine, gentle and still wonderfully fresh after 100 years with a green streak running right the way through on the palate, firm dry tannins, beautifully pure.

Hint of almost old Tawny like green tones – deep clear chocolate brown.  Smokey peach and green apple, almost Madeira like aromas.  Very ripe rich fruit giving lovely balance.  Extraordinarily rich lingering flavour.  100 years old!  “a touch of green” (... tannins from stalks.)

Pale colour. Spicy nose, nutmeg, cinnamon.  Some scent of apple.  Butterscotch, burnt sugar on palate.   Xmas pudding.

Palish, soft, ruddy-tinged; initially lean, spirity, then rich, tangy and after an hour in the glass etheral, spicy, lovely: medium-sweet, 'hot', lean, dry finish.  But in excellent condition.

This is amazing for its youthfulness.  It is an unusually deep red for such an old wine, and is still showing a lot of life, with rich cherry aromas, plenty of spicy, peppery fruit flavours and a long, earthy finish.

Two useful notes in the mid-1980s, both bottles with fully branded corks.  Fairly pale but with an attractive rosy hue; fragrant, forthcoming; still sweet, firm, with the power and backbone I normally associate with (another brand), plus cinnamon spiciness and great length.

Tasted many times:  soft and lovely in 1965; ethereal, refined (1969).
