1903 Vintage

Viticultural and Weather Conditions

There was some damage from heavy frost during the winter of 1902/03 in the altos (the hilltops).  Three weeks of rain in April was followed by unseasonably warm weather through May and June, which in turn was followed by quite cool conditions.  No really hot weather arrived again till late August.

Beneficial rain fell just before harvest, which began generally around 28 September and continued with perfect weather.  Yields were very low - in some cases just half the usual.

Vinification

The fermentation has been regular and allowed plenty of work.

Winemaker's Overview

Visited all three quintas (for the tastings).  Weather fine and hard frosts.  The young wines look well, especially at Senhora da Ribeira.
