Tasting Notes

Still brick red in colour with an amazing pink hue then a browning rim; gentle dusty nose with a touch of milk chocolate; still rich and sweet with dark chocolate at the core and dusty tannins.  Still has grip and depth after all this time.  Amazingly youthful and tight knit.  This was the best of a number of variable bottles.  Not voluptuous (possibly never was) but still elegant.

2 bottles, one badly acetic. Very medicinal almost banana aromas. 2nd bottle full range of tannins, lovely fruit aromas, beautifully balanced, rich, ripe.  Still a little red fruit. Long lingering finish. Dry cherry, lovely, excellent. Possibly a little rustic.

First bottle – completely volatile.  Second bottle / glass:  Pale gold.  Honey aroma.  Cherry stone palate, light body, fresh acidity, clean finish.

1990 tasting note year

Tasted several times. Consistently good for its age.  Pale but rich tawny - a better colour than the 1900; sweet, chocolate, liquorice-like bouquet; still some sweetness and considerable body.  A rich and distinctly powerful wine.  Last tasted Feb 1990.

James Suckling critic

Vintage Port (book, Suckling, 1990) source
1990 tasting note year

Tastes like a 20 or 30 year old tawny; not bad for a wine nearly 100 years old.  It is extremely delicious for its age.  Light red with a garnet edge, a nose of coffee and earth, medium-bodied, with woody coffee flavours, light tannins and a balanced finish.  Very delicate and faint.
