Viticultural and Weather Conditions

1894/95 was one of the wettest winters on record. A great deal of mildew in August, harvest started 20th September. Thunder storms daily, wine made under favourable conditions but heavy rain set in on 29th till noon 30th.

Winemaker's Overview

Vines wanting heat. Nascença (fruit set) good.

Heavy thunder showers on 15th did enormous damage in the altos (higher vineyards), but here the hail destroyed little.  Grapes looking well.  Pintor (colour change) fairly general.  Grapes have suffered from sun and a disease that dries them up. A little rain on 18th and weather quite cool.

Weather doubtful... Stayed two nights at Sra da Ribeira.  Tasted all 95's and settled about lotes etc.  Wines not so rotten as they might have been considering the amount of water that fell during the vintage.
