Smith Woodhouse's Quinta da Madalena

Christopher Smith, Member of The British Parliament and Lord Mayor of London, founded a small company to ship Port from the Douro in 1784. Some years later the Woodhouse brothers joined him and the brand acquired its current name. Through the last two hundred years, this small Port company has built a reputation for outstanding Vintage Ports, which has continued, since 1970, under the ownership of the Symington family.

Terroir

The vineyard is situated on a gentle slope, facing south and southwest, within a curve of the Rio Torto, literally the Twisted River, which runs south from the Douro near Pinhão.  The valley has long been recognised as a source for some of the finest grapes in teh Douro, due to its unique microclimate.  In the summer months temperatures at the base of the valley can rise as high as 40ºC in the shade which, in the near windless conditions of this narrow twisted valley, results in excellent maturity in the grapes at the time of harvest.  This rare concentration of flavour and sugars is exactly what is required to make great Port. The soil’s main component is schist, a laminated slate-like rock.

Wine

Smith Woodhouse Ports have outstanding length and structure and are drier than most.  Its Vintage Ports show a characteristic opulent rich style, balanced by firm hard tannins. Ageing gives these wines an unmatched elegance.  Madalena Ports are splendidly smooth on the palate, well balanced, with delicate fruit flavours and great length and intensity on the finish.
