Advice on trading and Buying

Can anyone help answer a few questions I have to get me started on the right foot regarding buying and trading Vintage Port?

I currently have a crate of 12 bottles of Warre's 1983 vintage port and was interested on peoples views and experiences on whether it's a good idea to sell individually or by the crate? If it's good to trade or sell?

Any information on the most suitable way to buy and trade will be much appreciated.

Kind regards

Re: Advice on trading and Buying

Sorry it took so long to get back to you, but business here is slow and I don't check in all that often.

You ask only two questions: "whether it's a good idea to sell individually or by the crate? If it's good to trade or sell?"

The answers to both questions seem to me to hinge on one issue - money.

Sold individually, your 12 bottles will garner more than one case lot.  It will of course take much more time and effort on your part to earn that additional money.

There is another factor in selling by the case that improves its "saleability" in that a case lot carries the promise of a better guaranteed provenance.

As to selling or trading - do you want money or more wine?  Money has the advantage of never going bad and always being suitable for its intended purpose.  Wine has neither of these advantages

Re: Advice on trading and Buying

 Thanks for the reply Frank.

I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. Originally I wanted to sell a few to buy some different Vintages or to trade some to start my cellar. This has of course all changed now, seeing as it was a christening gift I decided to drink two which were great and plan to drink one once a year to evaluate how it ages over the next 10 years.

It's all new ground to me but have recently read a book on Port by Richard Mayson I have added to my collection quite a bit since posting. Having discovered it does not carry the rise in price of Vintage Wine I decided that it is a drink to be drunk and enjoyed rather than traded or sold for profit. Having said that I will be laying down some cases of En Primeur for the future, you never know.
